Nuedexta is a drug meant to suppress symptoms of PBA (pseudobulbar affect), a condition that can occur in people with neurological damage. PBA causes fits of uncontrollable laughing or crying that don’t necessarily correspond to the actual emotions felt at the time. PBA can occur in people suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s, but it is rare.
Despite the low frequency of PBA in dementia sufferers, prescriptions of Nuedexta have risen dramatically in nursing homes across the country. This is because Nuedexta can be used as a chemical restraint in difficult patients or in cases where the nursing home is understaffed and wants to keep residents docile.
Nuedexta can cause a number of harmful side effects in elderly patients, including:
Diarrhea and vomiting
Dizziness and weakness
Coughing
Rashes
Nuedextra has been shown to significantly increase the risk of falling, which can be incredibly dangerous for elderly men and women. Falls can lead to broken bones, fractures, hospital stays, and even death.
Nuedexta can also be dangerous when mixed with other medications. Elderly men and women are often on a cocktail of medications that need to be carefully monitored, yet nursing homes often introduce Nuedexta without taking into account how it might react with other medications residents are currently taking.
One woman who was taking antidepressants and antianxiety medications experienced extreme weakness and fatigue after being prescribed Nuedextra. After she became almost unresponsive, her Nuedextra dosage was increased, and her symptoms worsened. Although she was eventually taken off the Nuedexta, the damage was done, and she died soon afterwards.
What to Do If Your Loved One was Harmed by Nuedexta
If you suspect that your loved one was seriously injured by Nuedexta, whether from side effects, over-prescription, or a bad reaction with another medication, you should call Tustin elder abuse lawyer Travis Siegel for a free consultation.
Nursing homes across America are often understaffed and careless with their residents’ well-being. Your loved one deserves better, and a lawsuit can help hold the nursing home responsible and ensure that future residents are treated better.
No one deserves to die or become seriously ill because a nursing home can’t be bothered to check whether a medication is safe to prescribe, or because they ignore dangerous side effects and continue using a drug for its convenience.
