More Than 25% of Nursing Home Abuse Goes Unreported

A recent report from the Office of Inspector General of the Department of Health and Human Services showed some disturbing statistics regarding the reporting of suspected abuse and neglect in nursing homes.

According to an article in McKnight’s Long-Term Care News, more than 25% of alleged incidences of abuse and neglect in skilled nursing facilities go unreported. This number includes rape and other acts of sexual abuse. “Appalling and deeply troubling” is how Mark Parkinson, president and CEO of the American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living, describes the report.

What’s equally disturbing about this statistic is that provisions in the Social Security Act require nursing home staff and emergency room workers to report any suspected elder abuse or neglect to police.
